Healthy Active School Travel at WoodLinks State School
The Ipswich City Council’s HAST (Healthy Active School Travel) initiative is aimed at encouraging families and students to seek alternative means for traveling to school. This has a twofold advantage:
1)      It enables children and their families to participate in a form of daily exercise through walking to school or the bus stop, riding a bike or riding a scooter.
2)      It will help alleviate some of the traffic congestion at the front of our school, especially in the afternoons.
Data from the Council shows that a very high percentage of families live within a one kilometre radius of our school. However, only a small number of students actually walk, ride or scoot. While we acknowledge that sometimes it is difficult to walk due to supervision or the need to drop siblings at different schools, WoodLinks staff are supporting the initiative by organising Walking Buses every Wednesday which begin from two starting points in our local area. Students are supervised as they walk or ride to school. Information about the Walking Buses can be found in our weekly newsletters and our Facebook Page.
Below is a link to an Ipswich Council online article written in response to the growing success of our Walking Buses and our participation in the HAST initiative.
Another great example of how WoodLinks State School takes an active role in the wellbeing of our students and our local community.
